I have spoken with literally hundreds of yoga studio owners and managers in the past talking about what works and doesn’t work in terms of selling yoga mats.
I have often been in the situation where a yoga studio owner will hold up a TPE or a plastic yoga mat and she/he will say to me, “You know… I put this $30 TPE yoga mat out 3 months ago and it still hasn’t sold. Why is that?”
Students want to support their yoga studios. But yoga studio management has to meet them halfway.
1) TPE, plastic and PVC yoga mats can usually be found for half the price at Target or Walmart so students will go there to purchase their yoga mat. Given the way volume pricing works national retailers have a huge price advantage.
2) Most yogis are very green and try to avoid plastic, TPE and PVC yoga mats.
3) Plastic yoga mats often are not the best mats from a performance perspective. If you were to go to your golf pro’s facility what you would see is your golf pro would only have on her/his shelf the highest performance clubs that she/he actually uses. The problem with plastic mats is they often can be slippery, curl up at the edges, bunch up underfoot, stretch, etc.
The key to selling yoga mats at a yoga studio is to offer an eco-friendly, high quality mat at a price that cannot be beat by a national retailer.
